Niall O’Brien’s photographic document of a group of young English punks has become a labour of love for the Dublin-born photographer and artist, now based in london.Over a period of three years, he has gained a level of access that has allowed him to capture a world that for many is entirely removed from their own.
“It can be a difficult line to walk,” O’Brien explains. “You’re balancing the need to have a relationship with these guys, to earn their trust. but you can never step close enough to change the dynamic. Sometimes it’s hard to keep that distance. but my rule is that I never do anything to influence the group. It’s got to be true.”
