Not for a long time has there been such hype about one artist that everyone knows so little about. All that anyone can agree on is that Abel Tesfaye, AKA The Weeknd is from Toronto and that he’s got something special. His first mixtape ‘House of Balloons’ dropped back in March to unanimous clapping, cheering and tear-wiping from the usual high places (your blog, your friend’s blog, Pitchfork).
His second tape ‘Thursday’ dropped in August and was so good it even made an appearance from Drake seem, well, not too Drake-y. His Hollywood-wax smooth slow jams give as much of a nod to Portishead as they do to D’Angelo and Jodeci, But you know that. And like us, you’re too busy dancing badly to them to really care.
But the oddest part about all of this is, despite the media attention and a cryptic but active twitter feed, The Weeknd is maintaining radio silence to the rest of the world. He hasn’t given any interviews and only just showed his face to the world when he started performing live back in July. Whether he’s an evil marketing genius on the same level as Microsoft and GM remains to be seen, but one things for sure, his next mixtape ‘Echoes of Silence’ can’t come quick enough.
In the meantime, we’re listening to highlight track ‘Loft Music’, a tune with such underlying filthy dirtiness, we won’t be able to look anyone in the eye for a few hours.
